A burning candle left unattended started a fire Thursday morning inside an apartment in Manteca, causing an estimated $90,000 in damage to the building and the apartment's contents, fire officials said. No injuries were reported. The fire occurred about 10 a.m. at a two-story apartment complex in the 1800 block of Pennebaker Way, just north of East Yosemite Avenue and east of Highway 99.
Firefighters arrived at the complex and spotted heavy smoke and flames coming from the second-floor apartment, according to the Manteca Fire Department. Nobody was inside the apartment when the firefighters arrived. Firefighters launched an aggressive interior attack on the blaze, while the adjacent apartments were evacuated. The firefighters stopped the flames before they reached nearby units.
